Distinguished and Famous people from Kimberly Coast
🎵 Jimmy Chi
Writer and musician Jimmy Chi grew up in Broome, and the town’s mixture of cultures helped shape his creative work. His musicals Bran Nue Dae and Corrugation Road brought Kimberley voices, humour and music to audiences well beyond the region. Schooling took him to Perth, but Broome remained central to his artistic identity. His songs also featured on the 1998 Kimberley compilation Didj’un, recorded at Goolarri Music’s Broome studios. Those links place him firmly in the coast’s musical history through upbringing, subject matter and collaboration, rather than through an honorary association added after his success.
🌟 Stephen “Baamba” Albert
Stephen “Baamba” Albert was born in Broome in 1950 and began performing with the Broome Beats in 1968. His musical world ranged across rock and roll, jazz and country, later including contributions to Bran Nue Dae and Corrugation Road. Audiences also knew his comic presence alongside Mary G. Behind the entertainment was a serious commitment to Indigenous education and media: he chaired the National Aboriginal Education Committee and helped found the Broome Aboriginal Media Association, which led to Goolarri Media Enterprises. Stories of his hometown, from pearling to its social life, remained part of his performances throughout a career that travelled widely.
